Cheryl Gittens-Jones is a Permanent Resident of the USA. She is a practicing Buddhist, a stay-at-home mom, poet, writer and novice photographer who has an opinion about everything. Cheryl visited Senegal, West Africa, on a research trip the 1990s. There, she came face to face with the horrible legacy of slavery at the Door of No Return on Goree Island. Her writing is centered on the plight of the 'other', and thematically holds to the relationships between exile, displacement and identity. Cheryl is a 1999 Frances Perkins Scholar and graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Presently, she is busy home schooling but still finds time to write. Writer's Statement: "I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~Frederick Douglas My poetry: http://musemelodies.blogspot.com/ I love to write. I enjoy telling stories and i like writing them down. Writing is the way I express myself. A topic will enter my head and it will percolate throughout my body until I write about it. Only then do I find release. Writing is like oxygen to me. It is simply something I must do. Anti-bullying work: Designed and organized "AmaSepiaChan Artworks" a moving 25 piece mixed media art exhibit artist AmaSepiaChan 14 years old various venues Fall 2013 to Spring 2014, various venues around/in Concord,NH I designed a website to support moving exhibit "AmaSepiaChan Artworks," my daughter's anti-bullying art project. My daughter encourages kids to fight back against the bullies by sharing their stories. She is 14 and all artwork on the site are her original pieces.
